For my higher design project I decided to take part in a Junk Kouture competition, which involved making an outfit from completely recycled materials. In my design I chose to use fruit netting as my main source of material, along with the little metal clasps that hold the net together and the aluminium usually used to package meat to create the corset.

Because the netting was see through I had to collect a lot of it so that the under-layer of the dress which was made out of an old curtain could not be seen. Many people in school and the local community helped me by collecting materials. It felt good reusing plastics but sad that so many are thrown away everyday.

Looking back on the dress now I am very happy and proud of what I achieved, although there are things that I would do differently, such as make the dress that little bit longer so that it lies more on the ground, it would add a better finish to the dress. I also think that the thick red rim at the top would have looked better as an off shoulder design, I feel it would make the design simpler and less crowded. Also I think I could have experimented more with the corset to make the waist more obvious. The rigidity of the aluminium meant that it didn't bend and therefore the waist seems indistinct
I was really happy with the colours and the way I put the different colours together. I think the black at the end worked well too. I was particularly pleased with bodice and the metal ends of the net, these gave an interesting texture and eye-catching effect.
